A trail map shows where you are supposed to go, while a compass helps you understand direction and line up the map with it.

Now the features on the map should make more sense compared to what you actually see on the trail.
Before you can follow a route, you need a good idea of where you are. Start by asking: yourself where did I begin? What trail junction did I pass last? What landmarks do I see around me? Am I near a creek, ridge, bridge, or lookout? Compare those visible features to your map. If you are on a marked trail, locating yourself may be as simple as finding the last junction or trail marker you passed. If the trail is less obvious, match the terrain around you to contour lines, bends in the trail, or nearby water features.
Once you know where you are, determine where you need to go next. Look at the map and identify the next junction, the next landmark, whether the trail trends north, south, east, or west, whether you should expect to climb, descend, or contour across a slope. This gives you a general sense of direction before you even use the compass for a more precise bearing.

Get your bearings. A bearing is the direction from one point to another, measured in degrees. To take a bearing from the map, place the compass on the map. Put the straight edge of the compass between your current location and your destination. If the trail is supposed to cross a creek after half a mile and it never does, stop and reassess. Small mistakes are easier to fix early.

Contour lines are one of the most helpful parts of a trail map because they show what the land is doing. Learn to read them. A few basics close lines mean steep slopes, wide spacing means gentle terrain. Circles or loops can show hills or depressions while V-shaped contours often point uphill in valleys or drainages. Know the difference between map north and magnetic north. This is where beginners often get confused. Your compass needle points to magnetic north, while your map is usually drawn to true north. The difference between them is called declination. In some places the difference is small, but in others it matters. Many trail maps list the local declination. Some compasses allow you to adjust for it. For casual hiking on clearly marked trails, a small declination difference may not cause major problems. But for more precise navigation, especially in remote areas, you should learn how to account for it before relying on map-and-compass travel. The best time to learn navigation is not when you are already confused. Study the map before leaving the trailhead. Identify where north is. Follow your position at each major junction.
